The Online Star - Stella Maris School Blog

We’re a very busy school with lots of exciting lessons and daily activities. Every so often each class takes it in turn to update our school blog ‘The Online Star’ logging precisely what we get up to on a day to day basis....

Works Of Art
Mon 4 February 2013 - KS2

KS2 Artwork Drawing and Painting

We've been showing our artistic flair this week! Here we are displaying some of our drawings using chalk and soft pencil, as well as some sunset paintings. Whilst getting busy in our art lessons we've also been writing our own limericks, learning about fractions and looking at the characteristics of living things.

Telling Stories
Fri 25 January 2013 - Year 1 & 2

KS1 Granny MacGinty Creative Story Writing

This week we've been letting our creativity and imaginations run wild! Inspired by the tale of Granny MacGinty we have been practising our writing, spelling and grammar by inventing our own stories.

A Pirate's Life For Me!
Wed 23 January 2013 - Early Years

Early Years Class in Pirate Costumes

Arghh me hearties! This half term we have been learning all about pirates! Here we are on 'Pirate Day' - what do you think of our costumes? There were lots of stripes plus some brilliant bandannas and waistcoats. Everyone had a go at walking the plank and we went on a treasure hunt around the whole school - the clues lead us to a chest full of treasure!

It's Christmas!
Fri 14 December 2012 - Whole School

What a busy week! Christmas is definitely coming. If it wasn't enough that we've been collecting items for our Christmas Fair this weekend, we've all been busy rehearing and performing our annual Christmas Concert. This year the infants performed 'The Grumpy Sheep' nativity, and the juniors performed 'The Bossy Christmas Fairy'! We also sang some carols for all the parents and grandparents who came to watch us.

Our hard work was rewarded with a visit from a travelling pantomime company who performed their Christmas production, 'The Magic Castle'! The stage setting and costumes were brilliant. Everyone had a great time!

Back To Nature
Tue 9 October 2012 - Early Years / KS2

On our nature walk

This week we thought we'd make the most of the Autumn weather by going on a nature ramble to Heaton Mersey Common. It was quite muddy in places but luckily the sun was shining so everyone in our Nursery, Reception, and Year 3,4,5, and 6 classes all enjoyed the afternoon outing. We found some interesting things such as toadstools as well as many types of trees, plants and mini beasts.

Media Moguls
Mon 25 June 2012 - Year 6

PureFM Visit

Last week we were visited by Tim and Sara from Pure FM. We were taking part in their weekly Breakfast show feature 'How Cool Is Your School?' and had a go at interviewing each other as well as helping to present their listener competition 'Idol Ideology'. It was quite nerve-wracking at first but we soon got the hang of it and are looking forward to hearing our voices on the radio! If you're in the Stockport area you can tune in at 107.8fm or you can listen anywhere via the web http://www.pureradio.org.uk/ - we should be on about 8.20am each day for a whole week from today.

In fact, we're getting the hang of this media thing; we're also putting together a newspaper by writing articles after we went round interviewing our teachers. We have gathered all the information together and are picking which one will be the lead story this week.

Tiny Torch-bearers!
Fri 22nd June 2012 - Nursery/Reception

EYFS Olympic Torch!

We've been getting really excited about the Olympic Torch passing through Manchester and Stockport this weekend! In celebration we made our own torch by rolling a piece of gold cardboard into a cone, then adding some flames by using red, orange and yellow tissue paper. We were so proud of it that we asked Miss Geldard if we could test it out and run some relays in the playground. Luckily it stayed dry for us, let's hope the rain holds off for the official torch-bearers this weekend!

Relay, Steady, Go!
Tue 22nd May 2012 - Whole School

Relay Of Prayer

We've had a great few days looking after Diocese of Salford's Relay Of Prayer Olympic torch! First of all St Winifred's School passed the torch to us during an assembly in which they told us about Tanzania, then after the weekend we took a trip to St Catherine's School in Didsbury to pass over the torch with an assembly about our adopted Relay Of Prayer country, Canada. Here's a few pictures of us in action...

Wheels on the Bus...
Weds 9th May 2012 - Whole School

Looking for Pond Life

Today we all went on a whole school trip to National Trust park Dunham Massey - it was a great day! We went for a walk and saw lots of squirrels as well as Deer lazing in the grounds of the big old Georgian house. It was the perfect place to look for mini beasts as well and we found many different creatures from snails to woodlice hiding in the grass and trees. We also went inside the house which was full of grand paintings and books. In one room we could even play the piano and try on royal robes! Everyone really enjoyed themselves. Check out the photo gallery of our day....

Happy Easter Everyone
Mon 26th March 2012 - Nursery/Reception

Making Bunny Ears

Wow, what a week! We've been learning all about Easter this week by getting super creative in the kitchen - our hot cross buns and Easter nest cakes were very tasty! We've also been making bunny ears in our art lessons and took a Spring walk to Heaton Moor Conservation Area to make the most of the sunshine and learn about this season's wildlife. Here we are enjoying our handbaked creations....

Giving the teachers a break....

Dressed for success!

This week we've been working really hard. Most of us have finished our 11 plus exams so now we're looking forward to making the most of our last term of the year - that means getting ready for our school's junior public speaking competition this summer. To prepare, Mrs Johnson set us the task of teaching each other! We were allowed to pick any subject we wanted, did some research, then took it in turns to speak to the whole class about it. Here we are displaying some of the saris and a traditional cloak that Amal brought in to tell us about Eid and how it's celebrated...
