As part of Stella Maris School’s day to day teaching, all pupils learn French from the Pre-Prep to Year 6.
Children love to learn by ‘doing’ and our drama activities encourage role-play, and stimulate the imagination. Amongst the highlights of the school year for pupils and parents are the school’s Summer and Christmas concerts in which every child participates. Children may also take part in the optional extra-curricular lessons and clubs. We have a dedicated speech and drama teacher who comes into school on a weekly basis. Children who participate in speech lessons are entered for the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (L.A.M.D.A.) speech examinations.
At Stella Maris, as part of promoting a healthy lifestyle we actively encourage all boys and girls to participate in sport.
During P.E. children are involved in a whole range of activities, and sports, including football, cricket, netball, rounders and hockey. The children are taught by a team of coaches from Primary Sports Coaching Ltd who are assisted by class teachers.
Children in Years 2-6 enjoy swimming lessons at Stockport’s Grand Central Pools on Friday afternoons throughout the year, during which they are taught by professional swimming coaches.
To give children an even wider introduction to the world of sport, an optional after-school Sports Club provides tuition in a variety of sports and games on Thursday evenings. Younger pupils may take part in Infant Multi-Sports which takes place each Tuesday after school. Both clubs are hosted by the Primary Sports Coaching team.
During the Summer Term we hold an annual Sports Day when all pupils take part and all their families are welcome to attend. We also run a cross-country event during the Spring Term.
The school has an agreement with the adjacent Heaton Mersey Cricket and Lacrosse Club which provides large playing fields for our outdoor sports.
We also aim to arrange 'friendly' sports matches with neighbouring schools throughout the school year.
We hold a proud tradition of excellence in music and our choir has achieved considerable success at many local and major music festivals – our infant choir and junior choirs won second place in the 2016 Heaton Mersey Youth Festival. Each year the choir performs at local residential homes and also appears as part of Merseyway Shopping Centre's big annual Christmas Lights Switch-On which takes place each November and often features numerous celebrity guests.
Recorder tuition is included in the music timetable and individual piano, singing, flute and clarinet tuition is also available on request for all children in Years 1 to 6.
